From the Manufacturer
FE 28mm F2 E-mount Prime Lens
An excellent choice as a second lens, this full-frame 28mm wide-angle prime features a bright F2 maximum aperture and outstanding overall optical performance. Advanced optics and coatings with a 9-blade circular aperture deliver beautiful images. Internal focusing on a fast and quite linear actuator makes this lens ideal for both still and movie.
Additional Features
Circular Aperture
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass / Super ED glass
As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration.
Aspherical lens elements
Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.
Internal focusing
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.
Go even wider or fisheye with converters
For even wider perspectives an optional Ultra-wide Converter (SEL075UWC) and Fisheye Converter (SEL057FEC) can be added to increase the angle of view to 21mm wide-angle or 16mm fisheye with full 180° coverage, respectively. Corresponding EXIF data is generated when these converters are attached to the lens, making data management easy.1

Versatile small lens, sharp photos

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2017This lens is incredible. I shot a ton of stuff on vacation in the mountains with this lens and the landscapes look beautiful. I also did a bunch of night time astrophotography and they all look gorgeous. The sharpness and color rendition is excellent. Like most lenses, a little less sharp and darker in the corners, but not too bad and can be mostly fixed in post. What really blew me away is how small it is. I’m new to mirrorless, so maybe that’s a part of it, but it’s still small compared to the Sony 85mm f/1.8 I also picked up. It’s really compact on the body and makes a great walk around lens. Wish it was a little wider though, such as 24mm often found on Canon, but I wonder if they couldn’t get it quite this compact otherwise. It’s a great all around lens with great build quality and I highly recommend it as a no-brainer purchase for starting to build your mirrorless kit because the quality is amazing at this price point.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2016For it's price point, it's a very nice/fast lens.
I have the Sony a5100, mainly for vlogs, and this prime provides great depth of field at "f/2".
Keep in mind that if you have a crop sensor, in my case I have an APS-C with my Sony a5100, be sure to calculate the "crop factor" in to get the true focal length and aperture. On a crop sensor, this lens ISN'T a 28mm focal length, but rather a 42mm (28mm x 1.5 (Sony's crop factor for APS-C sensor) = 42mm focal length). The aperture is more of a '3' rather than a '2' as you'll want to multiply the crop factor to the aperture as well for the crop sensor. So in my case, it doesn't act like a 'wide angle' lens, but more close to a 50mm lens, which is perfect because I was thinking of getting the 50mm f1.8, not knowing yet about the crop factor (this lens would have been a 75mm!).
It's light-weight, keeps my camera compact for the most part, and GREAT in low light situations.
This lens does not have OSS (Optical Steady Shot), so it can be very shaky when filming without a gimbal of some sort.
I also like the fact that you can attach an Ultra-wide Angle lens or Fish-eye lens to it as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2015This is by far the best carry around lens Sony offers for the FE mount. When you compare the price and performance, this far out performs the 35mm f2.8, and though the new Zeiss Batis 25mm is absolutely gorgeous, it's three times the price. I also own the 55mm f1.8, but this is the lens on my a7ii 90% of the time. From wide open it's sharpness is impressive, it's distortion is there, but easily correctable, CA is handled well, and the bokeh to me is very acceptable.
It's wide enough for street and landscape photography, yet the minimum focus distance is close enough to also be used as a portrait lens. There is quite a bit of distortion when using for portrait, but Lightroom has a lens profile that eliminates that. I believe this should be offered as a kit lens over the 28-70mm.
Overall, I recommend this lens over any other FE mount simply because of the value, size, and focal range. I'm glad I returned the 35mm f2.8 for this.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2015In a nutshell: Nice sharpness and expanded capability for an excellent price.
Sony got it right with this high-value lens. It's surprisingly sharp for the price and has very nice bokeh. Excellent for landscapes and big scenes. It's my go-to lens for street and vacation photos. It's fast enough to capture most hand-held low-light situations with the A7RII. While plastic construction, it feels good in the hands and is definitely not flimsy construction. I'm still getting used to the fly-by-wire manual focus on these lenses, but so far have found it to be quite usable. After also buying the 55mm super-sharp Zeiss glass, I find myself wanting just a bit more sharpness, but it's still leaps and bounds beyond my old equipment. Finally, my one gripe is that it wasn't packaged with a rear lens cap. Had to pick that up separately. Seems like a cheap addition to the package, but I wont let it tarnish the rating of this lens.
Next, I'm picking up the Sony wide-angle adapter.
No regrets at all with the purchase. Well worth every penny.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2015Have this for four months now. Bought this to supplement Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 for when I need autofocus such as when shooting moving objects or video. Sharpness wise, the two lenses are right up there in terms of resolution, color and sharpess. I believe Voigtlander has a prettier bokeh rendering with a slight faux "leica halo" when wide open that the f2 can't achieve. There is notable distortion with both lenses. It's not worth fixing most of the time with the Voigtlander. And, it's very easy to fix with lens profile with the Sony.
I also have the 21mm converter. Great attachment for the 28mm lens. Easy to attach and detach, and fairly well built for the price. Picture is softer with the adapter, but, amazingly enough, the distortion is lower. At the same time, distortion is harder to fix if you want it distortion free.
I use this lens on both my A7II and NEX3N. They are just as sharp on both cameras. With the 21mm adapter, the NEX3N is sharper.
My opinion, I can't justify getting the 35mm FE when you can get this lens. IMO, it's better in every way even if they were the same price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value prime for Sony
Fast compact prime which is really well balanced for Sony bodies. Great AF. Pretty extreme barrel distortion and pretty heavy vignetting, but software corrected. Corners can be soft until stopped down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all around lens!
I have this mounted on my a7III most of the time. Fits into my smaller bag easily as well. The focal length is perfect for walking around and taking casual photos. F2 is a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente lente para video

4.0 out of 5 stars Gutes Objektiv - etwas zu teuer
